Hiking: In addition to the Lakewalk along Lake Superior’s breathtaking shoreline, we have dozens of hiking trails, meandering creeks and secluded waterfalls within our city’s parks and nature preserves. Travel north on famed HW 61, a National Scenic Byway, and the hiking opportunities are endless from Gooseberry Falls to Tetegouche State Park… a hiker’s paradise!

Skiing/Skating: Cross-country skiing is some of the best you’ll find anywhere. Parks and Recreation maintains trails all over town and the Snowflake Nordic Center offers 15 kilometers of well-groomed trails as well as a speed skating rink. For downhill skiers there’s Spirit Mountain in town and Lutsen Ski Resort an hour’s drive up the North Shore.

Water Sports: Whitewater rafting your cup of tea? Check out Superior White Water Raft Tours and UMD’s Kayaking and Canoeing experiences. Canoe the Brule River. Rent a sailboat with Sailboats, Inc.

Birding: Even the birds flock to Duluth. Since migratory birds dislike flying over open water, they follow along the shoreline, funneling into Duluth on their spring and fall journeys and making the area one of the premier birding spots in the country. Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Over 300 different species of birds have been sighted locally. Golfing: Superior National Golf Course at Lutsen, MN is just an hour’s drive north, but we have eight other golf courses right here in town. Golf Digest rated Duluth as one of the best places in the nation for quality and accessibility in public golf.

Fishing: Fishing opportunities abound for salmon, lake trout, sturgeon, and walleye fishing. Boat rentals are available.
